Having empathy for yourself is crucial. In this exercise, we are going to write a letter to our former selves. Say how you truly feel and hold yourself accountable, but also understand things from your former self's perspective. Your former self didn't know what you know now, and this matters a lot.

You may not be able to finish your letter at this time, but that's OK. You can always finish it later. The important thing is to become cognizant of these things and to get into the headspace where you can start practicing empathy for yourself. Empathy is not just for other people. Neither is compassion or forgiveness. We can and should practice these things with ourselves. There is no trust without empathy.

*This exercise can be emotionally challenging.
